The usual cover problems

Has this happened to you?

These are the complaints we hear from publishers again and again — about doing it yourself, and about hiring a designer.

Doing it yourself with ChatGPT or Canva

  • You've re-prompted ChatGPT again and again, and the cover is still only nearly right.
  • The title looks pasted on, or something just looks “AI” — the hands, the faces, the lettering.
  • You get one flat image. Changing a single word means starting over.
  • KDP rejects the file because of the spine, the bleed or the trim size.

Hiring a designer

  • They go quiet, and you have no idea when your cover will be ready.
  • You get one or two ideas, and neither feels right.
  • You ask for the same change twice because it wasn't done the first time.
  • The editable file costs extra — so book 2 never quite matches book 1.

And the big one

You showed it to friends, family or a Facebook group. Everyone said it looks great. You still don't know if it will sell.

Every problem on this list is something our process is built to stop.

Why it's worth $499

Why pay $499 when ChatGPT is free?

Your reader sees your cover as a thumbnail, next to a page of competitors, for about a second. A cover that looks good enough on your screen can disappear in that row. Here's the difference.

How it works

What happens after you order?

Six steps, from your brief to your cover live on Amazon.

  1. Your project manager

    We research your niche

Your project manager publishes on KDP and coaches other publishers. Before anything is designed, they look at the best-selling books in your category and work out what they have in common — the colours, fonts and images buyers there expect to see.

  2. Your designer

You get dozens of cover ideas

Not two or three safe options. Your designer sends a wide range of genuinely different ideas, so you can see what works before you commit to anything.

  3. You

    You pick your favourites

All the ideas arrive on your own private review page. Rank your top three, leave comments on the exact cover you mean, and see each one next to the books it will compete with on Amazon.

  4. Your designer

We polish the one you pick

We improve your chosen idea until it's right — the layout, the lettering, how well it reads as a thumbnail. Changes to that idea are unlimited. We don't count rounds.

  5. Your designer

We finish it by hand, in every format

Your designer rebuilds the cover in Photoshop: lettering set properly, artwork cleaned up, everything on its own layer. Then it is made for Kindle, paperback, hardcover and ACX, with the spine sized to your exact page count.

  6. Your project manager

We help you upload it to KDP

We don't just send files and disappear. Your project manager helps you upload, checks it looks right in KDP's previewer, and fixes anything KDP flags.

How we check every cover

How do you know your cover will work?

We test every cover idea before we send it to you, so you don't waste time choosing between ones that won't stand out. Each one goes through the same six checks:

Can you read it as a thumbnail?

Amazon shows your cover tiny. If the title can't be read at that size, it doesn't pass.

Does the eye go to the right place?

The title, the image and the subtitle should be seen in the right order — not all fighting for attention.

Does the image fit this book?

The picture should say what this book is about, not be decoration that could sit on any book.

Does it look like its category?

Buyers expect certain colours, fonts and images in each niche. Miss them and they scroll past.

Is the layout clean?

Margins, balance and spacing — the difference between a designed cover and a cluttered one.

Will KDP accept it?

Resolution, bleed, trim, spine and safe zones — so KDP accepts it and the print matches the screen.

The grayscale test

We take the colour out. If the cover stops working, it was relying on colour alone — and it will get lost next to a brighter competitor.

The blur test

We blur the cover until only the biggest shapes are left. That's roughly what a buyer scrolling past actually notices. If nothing stands out, they keep scrolling.

Does it stand out next to the competition?

Buyers never see your cover on its own. So we put it in a mock row of Amazon search results, next to real best-sellers in your category, and check it holds its own there.

If it doesn't stand out here, it doesn't matter how good it looks at full size.

How involved do you want to be?

We'll do everything for you — unless you want control.

You get your own project manager, who publishes on KDP and coaches other publishers, and your own professional designer. They handle the details, so you choose how involved you want to be.

Option A

“Just do it for me”

You're publishing a lot of books, and cover design isn't where you want to spend your week — no re-prompting, and no checking for mistakes that should never reach you. Send the brief and we take it from there.

  • A range of cover ideas, all tested before you see them
  • Designed for your niche and what your book offers
  • You only see work that's worth your time
  • We help you upload to KDP until it looks right

Option B

“I want a say in everything”

You have strong opinions about your cover — and you should, it's your book. Comment on every idea and steer the design as closely as you like.

  • Talk to your project manager directly, not a support queue
  • Comment on any idea on your private review page
  • Quick replies, and we work the way you like to work
  • Unlimited changes to the idea you pick

Our work

Do you publish in niches like these?

Every category has its own look — the colours, fonts and images buyers expect. Here are covers we've designed across them.

The Effortless Anti-Inflammatory Diet Cookbook cover, pulled apart into its three editable layers: typography, visual, and background.

You own the file

Want to change the subtitle later, or make book 2 match?

You can. You get the layered Photoshop file, not just a picture — so the lettering, the artwork and the background can each be edited on their own.

  • Make a series matchBook 2 uses the same lettering and style as book 1, without starting again.
  • Update it in minutesNew subtitle, new badge, new edition — a quick edit, not a redesign.
  • Use any designer laterAny designer can open the file and work with it. You're never tied to us.

The “That's The One” Guarantee

Questions

Still have a question?

Why not just make my cover with ChatGPT?

You can, and plenty of publishers start there. The difference is in three places. We research what's already selling in your category before designing anything, instead of starting from a prompt. You choose from dozens of ideas, all tested at thumbnail size, instead of accepting whatever one prompt produced. And the finished cover is rebuilt by hand in every format, as a layered file you can edit — not one flat image you can never change.

What counts as unlimited changes?

Once you've picked an idea, we keep improving it — lettering, colours, images, layout — until you're happy. There's no limit on rounds and no extra charge. If you decide you want a completely different idea after we've started building, we'll talk it through and tell you honestly what it means for your timeline.

Which formats do I get?

All of them: Kindle, paperback, hardcover and ACX audiobook. Each one has a different size and shape, and each is built properly rather than stretched from another, with the spine sized to your exact page count. You also get the layered file, so the design is fully yours.

Do you use AI?

Yes, to explore ideas, and we're open about that — it's how you get dozens of ideas instead of three. But nothing we send you is a raw AI image. The idea you choose is rebuilt by hand in Photoshop: lettering set properly, artwork cleaned up and corrected, everything on its own layer. If an idea can't be brought up to a professional standard, we tell you rather than send it.

How do you know a cover will work?

We test it before you see it. Every idea goes through the same six checks — can the title be read as a thumbnail, does the eye go to the right place, does the image fit the book, does it look like its category, is the layout clean, will KDP accept it — plus the grayscale and blur tests. Then we put it in a mock row of Amazon search results next to your real competitors, because that's where buyers will see it.

How long does it take?

Your first cover ideas usually arrive within a few days of your brief. The finished files follow once you've picked one and we've made your changes. The pace depends mostly on how quickly you send feedback — your project manager gives you a schedule for your project when it starts.

What if I don't like any of the ideas?

It's rare with dozens to choose from. Usually it means the brief needs refining, so we create a fresh batch of ideas to hone in on the winning design.

Can you match my existing series?

Yes. Send us the covers you already have and we'll match their lettering, colours and layout, so the new book sits neatly next to the others on Amazon.

Who does the work?

A small team, not a marketplace. Your own professional graphic designer creates every idea for your book and does all the finishing by hand — the same person from start to finish. Your own project manager publishes on KDP and coaches other publishers; they do the research, run your review page and help you upload to KDP. Josiah, who founded KDPChimp, has published 100+ books over eight years on KDP.

Why only 15 projects a month?

Because the same designer works on every cover and the same project manager runs every project. 15 is what they can do without the quality slipping or your emails going unanswered. When the month is full, we tell you the next start date rather than take your money and put you in a queue.

Ask a question first

P.S. — If you're thinking “ChatGPT is free”: it is. But your cover is the one thing every buyer sees, and a cover that doesn't get the click costs you every day your book is live.
